A famous inn and restaurant since the early 60’s, The Walnut Tree sits two miles east of Abergavenny. It offers proper dining and drinking in an informal setting. From a glass of good wine with a plate of something, through to full lunch or dinner. There are around 20 tables simply laid with decent china and glass. There is room for 70 diners and we open from Tuesday to Saturday, lunchtime and evening. There is no service charge. We take Visa and MasterCard.
The food is an eclectic mix, based on Shaun Hill’s personal taste, paired with sound cooking techniques; rather than a particular country's cuisine. A unifying feature is the core of excellent ingredients.
No dress code or similar pomposity. Journalists have given independent comment. This site will not offend visitors with smarmy overstatements of what's on offer.
The aim is for an easy-to-read compact list of around 100 wines. Robin Jones helps me put the wine list together, and we have opted for quality and interest over quantity or any notion of being comprehensive. And whilst we try to cater for the full taste range, the wines are unusually grouped...
ESSENTIAL whites, rosé and reds. A solid mainly varietal-based selection, with a good choice by-the-glass.
CORE whites and reds. A few wines loved by myself and Anja from The Merchant House days, plus exciting newer stuff - shining stars that are good value too.
CLASSIC whites and reds. Mostly top-end drinking, but not exclusively. These bottles have to be worth some ‘serious’ money.
Wine service in restaurants can be quite elaborate, but our approach is straightforward. We offer you a taste to check the condition, pour a small glass for each diner and then leave it up to you.
I hope you’ll try our suggestions,
Santé, Shaun.
Our à la carte menu (lunch and dinner) changes every day. Set lunch is only decided late-morning; we only show a sample. Dishes are subject to availability of ingredients, especially relevant for fish and shellfish. So if you have set your heart on a particular item, phone us to check.
If you have dietary or allergy issues, then please phone us a few days ahead, so we can try to accommodate you. We can prepare smaller portions of several dishes (not all, sorry!) on the menu for our junior (i.e. under 12) diners.
